Musée d'Histoire et du Port Antique

by Benoit Paillé

‘‘ Even more than the anonymous labourer working in the shadows to bring life to this museum, it's also the aspect and the neon light that prompted me to take this futuristic photo.

The Artist

Aged 26, this young Canadian photographer studied medical biology for 3 years before turning to the arts. He is now a renowned, self-taught photographer, whose work has been published several times around the world. He has taken part in many exhibitions in Canada, Japan, the US, Barcelona, Moscow and Paris. His projects are all people-oriented and based on portraits and night-time themes.

Musée d'Histoire et du Port Antique

Set in its original surroundings, just a short hop from the Vieux-Port, this fully-renovated museum portrays the maritime history of Marseille in thirteen sequences, from 600 BC to current day.

The collection of 40,000 objects and documents includes the largest Roman wreck ever discovered (early 3rd century). The adjacent archaeological site – now part of the museum – is the perfect vantage point for admiring the port installations and Greek gate and ramparts of the ancient city of Massalia, together with a paved Roman road.
