La Digue du Large

by Olivier Metzger

‘‘ The dyke appeared before our tossing boat. Solid, right on time and of a simple beauty. ”

The Artist

Winner of the Voies Off prize in 2004, the Prestige BMW prize in 2008, in 2012 he exhibited his images at FIAC and the Rencontres d'Arles. His aesthetic choices take us into a universe that is familiar, one we know, and yet one that is odd and strange.

la digue du large

Spanning seven kilometres, the sea dyke forms a long, narrow barrier between the town and sea and offers boats moored between the Vieux-Port and L'Estaque shelter from swell and storms. Although visitors were allowed here in 2013 to view the installation by artist Kader Attia it is now closed to the public once more. But there's a trick if you want to get a glimpse: simply jump on a boat!
