Ste Victoire - St Marc Jaumegarde, walk between Barrage du Bimont dam and Bibemus quarry
Saint Marc Jaumegarde - Walk - Toute l'année
Whoever said Sainte-Victoire mountain was just a heap of dry stone?! Although this saying could be true for the southern slopes and peaks, the western slopes, on the contrary, feature two astonishing reservoirs. This delightful itinerary starts out from Aix-en-Provence and Bibémus quarry or, if you're heading the other way, from Saint-Marc Jaumegarde and Bimont dam. Set at the bottom of a deep valley, where ochre-red rocks stand out against green vegetation, is the Zola dam, built by the father of the famous author of the same name. Its charming pocket-sized and tumbledown aspect contrasts sharply with that of the recent Bimont dam: a proud and powerful concrete arch bordering a vast reservoir. Between the two, an agreeable footpath where underwoods alternate with clearings, offers agreeable views over the mounts of Sainte-Victoire, Chaîne de l’Etoile and Gardanne.
