The Alpilles hills

Aureille, Saint Rémy de Provence, Le Paradou, Eyguières, Les Baux de Provence, Mouriès, Saint Etienne du Grès, Mas Blanc des Alpilles, Eygalières, Maussane les Alpilles - Nature Park

Oriented East-West, the limestone the Alpilles, geological extension of the Luberon Mountains rises in the heart of Provence. By far, its jagged peaks, 300 m to 400 m above sea level, give the illusion of real mountains. They constitute a small limestone massif of 25 km long 6 to 8 km wide. Between Rhône and Durance, point sharply skyward a white mass with bluish reflections.Their chaotic topography is made more strange even by old stone farms. Since the Neolithic period trade routes borrow valleys and settlements are born at their junction, such as Les-Baux. The numerous natural caves in the massif have served shelter to humans for thousands of years. Celto-Ligurians, Phocians and Gallo-Roman provide almost continuous occupation of the Alpilles. The middle ages saw building of many castles whose ruins still stand guard. From one end of the chain to the other, pass by the countryside of rural Provence: olive groves, rich vineyards.Vineyards and olive trees predominate, especially on the more gentle slopes on the South side of the Alpilles. The Vallée des Baux brings together the most beautiful olive groves in the region, its oil and its broken green olives are renowned. Of course, it is worth mentioning the A.O.C. Coteaux des Baux-de-Provence, newly created. It includes 12 distributed areas in the different communes of the Alpilles. This chain is also deemed, rightly, for its particular ornithological fauna. The Raptors are the jewel in the Crown, particularly the Bonelli's Eagle. To Eyguières in Eygalières, Maussane, Fontvieille, Saint-Rémy and les Baux-de-Provence, hiking trails abound. Each stop is source of wonder. And it is no coincidence that each village serves today as a refuge for artists and celebrities.Highest point: Les copies (493 m).
