Musée Yves Brayer

Les Baux de Provence - Museum

The Museum Yves Brayer occupies one of the most beautiful residences in the centre of the village, the hotel of piglet. It hosts a major retrospective of the work of this painter, very attached to the Mediterranean countries, which include the most representative of the figuration of the 20th century. In his youth, Yves Brayer is attracted by the Spain and the Italy which he expresses with power-specific characters, both oils by gouaches and of monotypes. In 1945, begin his regular stays in Provence, first at Saint - Rémy, and then to leases. It strives to translate the appearance arid and wild limestone ridges, beyond peaceful olive groves. Attracted by the nearby Camargue, he is seduced by its vast expanses of birds, horses and bulls. His oils, watercolors and lithographs make these landscapes familiar to the public during exhibitions in Paris and in various capitals abroad also. His life is shared between its mas in les Baux-de-Provence and his workshop in Paris. Invited to make exhibitions in various capitals, it also has the opportunity to travel to the Mexico, the Japan and all around the Mediterranean, where he reports mostly watercolours. In 1974, referring to the Nativity in the Alpilles, he produced frescoes of the white Penitents Chapel, facing the Church Saint-Vincent.
