Château des Baux

Les Baux de Provence - Monument

The site of the Château des Baux, overlooking the village and perched on the top part of the rock, extends over more than seven hectares; it is one of the most extraordinary sites in France and is protected as a national Historic Monument. Visitors can discover the main vestiges of the Château's tumultuous past. A series of 24 illustrations allows visitors to discover the Château as it was in the Middle Ages. The illustrations bring the different parts of the building back to life, just like a large history book. Twenty-seven panels explaining local history and geography punctuate the visitor's route. Viewpoint indicators supplement this information and allow visitors to make out the key sites of Provence and Camargue, this exceptional landscape which unfurls at the foot of the château. Audio-guides tracing the history of the château relate the past of Provence and take you on a journey back to the time of the Knights, rebel lords, wars, tournaments and lonely damsels. Mediaeval music is played under the château vaults and it is possible to hear the voices of the warriors and the laughter of the banquets. These audio-guides are available in six languages (French, English, German, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, Chinese and Portuguese) and are given to each visitor free of charge so they are completely free to move around the château at their own pace. The keep is the most representative vestige of this military architecture. Rooted to the rock since the late 12th century, it seems to be the last rampart of this impregnable fortress. Decorative remains adorn the high walls, with sculpted and decorated bases showing Saint Michael overcoming the dragon and the griffin. The base stone of the keep supports a Gallo-Roman votive stele; the mysterious reliefs of the Trémaïe (or the Three Marys), where the faithful believed they saw the effigies of the Virgin, Mary Jacobe and Mary Salome.
