Musée du Palais de l'Archevêché (musée des Tapisseries)

Aix en Provence - Museum

The former Archbishop's Palace, which became in 1909 the "Tapestry Museum" is a large building composed of four wings surrounding a courtyard. The museum, located on the 1st floor in the old Archbishops staterooms, stores a rich collection of tapestries from the 17th and 18th centuries (The Grotesque inspired by Berain, History of Don Quixote by Natoire, The Russians and Games according to Leprince) and some remarkable pieces of furniture (cabinets, chairs, dressers).

There is a gallery on the ground floor and a Gothic"room, host partners’ temporary exhibitions such as Les Rencontres du 9ème art.

The courtyard also houses the theater of the Archdiocese holding performances of the Opera Festival of Aix-en-Provence. Created in 1948 under the leadership of Gabriel Dussurget, this is one of the largest outdoor festivals, It quickly gained international reputation.

The museum's collections were continuously enriched from the seventies on with textile arts, contemporary visual art (Cane, Buraglio, Bioulès, Surian, Garanjoud, ...) and with performing arts related to t the Opera Festival history

The underlying idea fueling the museum’s renovation is to eventually create an " Opera House " to accommodate the opera heritage collections of the City (sets, costumes, models ... ) coming from the Opera Festival and the Jeu de Paume Theater.

The museum is labeled “Museum of France”.
Permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions, conferences, concerts are offered.
