Les négociants font construire des demeures ostentatoires jouxtant l'entrepôt et les bureaux. De toutes les villas élevées au XIXème s, la plus originale est le Château Armieux, actuel palais de justice. Ce château médiéval fut érigé en 1905 par un riche marchand de savon en hommage à sa femme.
