Museon Arlaten - musée de Provence
Arles - Cultural place
After 11 years of closure, the Museon Arlaten, thoroughly renovated, is once again open to the public.
Founded and inaugurated in 1909 by Frédéric Mistral, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and champion of the Provençal language and culture, the Museon Arlaten has been closed to the public since 2009.
Its thorough renovation, respectful of Mistral's heritage and more than a century of history, offers a completely new visitor experience and provides an almost infinite variety of possibilities for further discovery.
While the dioramas, the costumes of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the Tarasque, the amulets, the works and the spirit of Mistral are still present, the scenographies have been entirely revised to be sometimes faithful to the origin, sometimes revisited to give them a new historical depth. The public will also be able to discover the results of contemporary investigations carried out by the museum teams. Nearly sixty digital devices (videos, texts, readings in Provençal, sounds, games, music, multimedia creations...) will bring to life the Provence of yesteryear and contemporary Provence, fully taken into account with the imprint of today's creators, placed on this renovation.
To cross the threshold of the Museon Arlaten is to enter a place shaped by two thousand years of history! At the end of the Forum in Roman times (a series of Roman remains, columns, the street, pavements and pavements are still visible in the courtyard of the museum), an aristocratic residence in the Middle Ages, a Jesuit college in the 17th and 18th centuries, a prison and a place of debate during the French Revolution, a new college and then a museum, now renovated, the Museon Arlaten is a major witness to the architecture and history of Arles from Antiquity to the 21st century.
Finally, two major new features enhance the visit:
- the grand staircase, designed by the architect of the renovation, Michel Bertreux, is enhanced by two creations by Christian Lacroix. Distributing all the floors, its decoration was conceived by the great Arles designer as "a gesture of gratitude and love" for the collections of the Museon Arlaten, here assembled and freely recomposed in two large backlit glass totems.
- The Jesuit Chapel, completely restored, is finally attached to the museum and will provide a sumptuous setting and volume for temporary exhibitions.
