Après 11 ans de fermeture, le Museon Arlaten, rénové en profondeur, retrouve son public.
Fondé et inauguré en 1909 par Frédéric Mistral, Prix Nobel de Littérature, chantre de la langue et de la culture provençales, le Muséon Arlaten était fermé au public depuis 2009.
Sa rénovation en profondeur, respectueuse de l’héritage mistralien et de plus d’un siècle d’histoire, offre une toute nouvelle expérience de visite et propose une variété presque infinie de possibilités d'approfondissement des découvertes.
Si les dioramas, les costumes des 18e, 19e et 20e siècles, la Tarasque, les amulettes, les œuvres et l’esprit de Mistral sont toujours présents, les scénographies sont entièrement revues pour être tantôt fidèles à l'origine, tantôt revisitées pour leur donner une nouvelle profondeur historique. Et le public pourra aussi découvrir le fruit des enquêtes contemporaines conduites par les équipes du musée. Près de soixante dispositifs numériques (vidéos, textes, lectures en provençal, sons, jeux, musique, créations multimedia…) feront revivre la Provence d’antan et la Provence contemporaine, pleinement prise en compte avec l’empreinte de créateurs d’aujourd’hui, posée sur cette rénovation.
Franchir le seuil du Museon Arlaten, c’est pénétrer dans un lieu façonné par deux mille ans d’histoire ! Extrémité du Forum à l’époque romaine (un ensemble de vestiges romains, les colonnes, la rue, les trottoirs et dallages sont encore visibles dans la cour du musée), demeure aristocratique au Moyen-âge, collège de Jésuites des 17e au 18e siècles, prison et lieu de débats sous la Révolution française, de nouveau collège puis musée, aujourd’hui rénové, l’écrin du Museon Arlaten est un témoin majeur de l’architecture et de l’histoire arlésiennes de l’Antiquité au 21e siècle.
Enfin, deux grandes nouveautés viennent rehausser encore la visite :
- le grand escalier, conçu par l’architecte de la rénovation, Michel Bertreux, est sublimé par deux créations de Christian Lacroix. Distribuant tous les étages, son décor a été conçu par le grand styliste arlésien comme « un geste de gratitude et d’amour » pour les collections du Museon Arlaten ici assemblées et recomposées librement dans deux grands totems de verre rétro-éclairés.
- la Chapelle des Jésuites, totalement restaurée, est enfin rattachée au musée et offrira un cadre et un volume somptueux aux expositions temporaires.
