Oppidum d'Entremont
Aix-en-Provence - Cultural place
Entremont is a Gallic village dating from the 2nd century BC. The site has been excavated since 1946. Remains of ramparts, housing, workshops, a room displaying the heads of enemies (a Celtic custom), statues and a wide range of objects have been found here. The oppidum (Roman settlement) is in a pleasant green park with open access during the site opening days and times.
The excavated statues and objects (ceramics, tools, etc.) are displayed in the Granet Museum.
The oppidum is owned by the French state and is chiefly managed by the Regional Archaeology Department (DRAC, Ministry of Culture). The Entremont Archaeological Association works to enhance the site.
The Entremont association organises guided visits with no reservation required on set dates for the general public. The annual schedule for visits is shown at the Oppidum, the Tourist Office and the Granet Museum, and on the Entremont Archaeological Association website. Each visit is advertised shortly beforehand in the "La Provence" newspaper on the Aix page. Prices for visits vary (admission to the site is free and payment for tours helps to fund the association, which is made up of volunteers). Visits last about 2 hours.
Guided tours in French. Tours can be given with a German translation on reservation.
For guided visits on request for groups, please visit the Entremont Archaeological Association website, call 04 42 63 13 20 / 06 75 63 44 72 or contact them by email.
Picnics and dogs are not allowed on the site.
