Bastide du Jas de Bouffan

Aix en Provence - Monument

The Bastide is closed until 2019 for refurbishment.

For lovers of Cezanne in France and around the world, as well as for the residents of Aix and Provence, the Jas de Bouffan estate, never before opened to the general public, is a fascinating attraction, a place which retains an aura of mystique despite its direct links with so many of the painter's celebrated works.

The XVIII century mansion belonged to Cezanne's family between 1859 and 1899.

At the age of 20, Paul Cezanne started out painting on the walls of the living room and outside in the park. A guided visit all around will let you see the different points of view taken by Cezanne himself while painting. As in the oval living room, a virtual recollection of his works can be seen.

Lights, Camera, Action! Provence and the Movies

The history of cinema in Provence dates back many years. And similarly to the region's artistic hall of fame, it was inspired by light...

As you may know, the very first moving picture was screened by the Lumière brothers ('Lumière' meaning 'light') on September 21st, 1895 in La Ciotat.
