Granet Museum

Aix en Provence - Cultural place

First opened in 1838, the Granet Museum is one of the region's most important museums, with the "Museum of France” label. It is a real institution in the city of Aix-en-Provence. The museum with a surface area of over 4000 m² gives pride of place to painting and sculpture. Almost 750 works are exhibited, providing a vast panorama of artistic creation, including archaeology, proto-Renaissance and Renaissance works, and with a particular focus on Provençal painting of the 20th century up to the masterpieces of modern and contemporary art due to the exceptional donation from Philippe Meyer, including paintings and sculptures by Alberto Giacometti. Along with the Jas de Bouffan landscapes from the Meyer donation, the museum has nine other oil paintings by Paul Cézanne from all periods of his career.

Since its renovation in 2006, the Granet Museum has regularly organised exhibitions with an international scope. In addition, the museum has developed a dynamic programme of temporary exhibitions, outreach projects, educational and cultural activities.

Guided visits for groups and individual visitors to the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions in French, English, German and Spanish. Audio-guides are available for rent in a number of languages (French, English, German, Italian, Spanish and Japanese) for adults for 3 euros and for children aged 6 and over (French and English) for 2 euros.

Activities for children and families are on offer all through the year (guided visits and workshops). A game booklet about the collections is available free at the museum entrance on request.

The Granet Museum has the Tourism and Disability label (hearing, motor and mental disabilities).

To present the main part of the Planque collection with the title Granet XXème (20th), the Jean Planque collection, the Aix Regional Authority opened the White Penitents Chapel, built in the 17th century and renovated for the occasion, providing the Granet Museum with over 700m2 of extra exhibition space.
