In Martigues, the maritime environment is more than an asset of the city, it is the city! Thus, all that concerns aquatic activities, starting with fishing, is a true local culture.
The famous Feast of the Sea and St. Peter, patron saint of seafarers, is the annual celebration "official", by its conduct at once sacred, pagan and popular making it accessible to all. During these festivities there is a spectacular religious ceremony on earth (procession where the saint is carried on a man's back) or on sea (surrounded by an impressive flotilla of fishermen and curious, the priest blesses the sheaf in homage to the disappeared in sea), and the popular festivities over the animations and the musical ambiances. Beware of the nuance: in Martigues, the Feast of the Sea is not folklore, but tradition! The difference: folklore pays tribute to past eras, while tradition continues. And it remains very current and alive!
