The Salon International des Santonniers d'Arles was created in 1958 by the santon craftsmen-artists whose president was Mr Marcel Carbonel, and the illustrious curator of the museums of the city of Arles Jean Maurice Rouquette.
January 1959: "In the name of all my comrades, I have come to ask you for asylum in your city, in these very places, where our dear santons have received their definitive consecration. We hope that there will be here in Arles, the spiritual capital of Provence, a permanent representation of our santons with the aim of a fruitful artistic confrontation between all of them.
These words were pronounced by the President Marcel Carbonel at the end of the 1st Salon d'Arles.
Thus, for more than 60 years, Arles has been the privileged and "official" artistic showcase of the santon making profession and thus of this emblematic popular art of Provence: Santons.
