Arles - Art contemporain - From 06/11/2021 to 15/05/2022, daily. According to the museum's schedule Friday 19 November at 6 pm Special meeting with Andy Neyrotti, curator of the exhibition Free of charge, by reservation only, before Thursday 18 November at 5pm on 04 90 49 37 58 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
His work, marked by the aesthetics of the ruin, seems to strive to create new vestiges, which fix in matter the traces of contemporary life while making the past of the cities he surveys resonate. Presented in the form of fragments of real or fictitious bodies, eroded by time and transformed by the environment, his sculptures are obtained from mouldings, assemblages and agglomerates. His most recent research is directed towards hybrid and chimerical creatures, and they have found in Arles and near the Rhône - home of the Tarasque or of the Drac, his Arlesian alter-ego, supposedly residing under the Grand Prieuré - particularly fertile ground to develop. Over the last few months, he has therefore undertaken to cross-reference sculptures found in the museum - gargoyles from the Grand Prieuré, cast on site, but also plaster sculptures inherited from the old Arles school of drawing, which are themselves copies of famous antiques such as the Venus of Arles or the Laocoon - with various elements brought back, so as to weave together a fresh look at these artistic testimonies from the past and a reflection on the evolution of his own sculpture, which is nourished by constant experimentation with very diverse materials: plaster, concrete, elastomer, plastiglomerate, waste of all kinds.
The exhibition "Ugo Schiavi. Gargareôn" (gargareôn, the Greek root of the word "gorge", which refers directly to the gargoyles whose forms and symbolism he has used) features some twenty works at the crossroads of classical statuary and contemporary installation. The presence of the Rhône permeates the presentation, which includes the broadcasting of a film in computer-generated images, co-directed with the artist Jonathan Pêpe, whose current takes us to an imaginary Arles and plunges us into the waters studded with archaeological remains and monuments that have suddenly sunk...
