Exploité entre 1883 et 1977 et reliant Paris à Constantinople, puis Istanbul, il est le premier d’une série de trains de luxe internationaux. Sa création a constitué un tour de force diplomatique et économique à une période où le chemin de fer est utilisé comme un instrument au service du pouvoir politique des empires et États. Les photographies présentées dans l’exposition Orient-Express & Cie sont issues du fonds d’archives de l’ancienne Compagnie internationale des wagons-lits. Sauvegardés par d’anciens salariés, épreuves photographiques, mais également plans, cartes, dessins techniques ou encore brochures publicitaires inscrivent l’Orient-Express dans son contexte historique global. Si la plupart des photographies sont anonymes, d’autres sont signées de célèbres ateliers tels Paul Nadar, Albert Chevojon ou encore Sébah & Joaillier.
