La première partie fait la part belle aux ports de l'Empire romain dont la simple évocation fait rêver : Ostie, Alexandrie, Leptis Magna, Pouzzoles, Césarée, Arles, Fréjus... Les aménagements qui ont permis leur extraordinaire développement ne sont pas oubliés : brise-lames, jetées, phares, entrepôts et cales à bateaux. De superbes aquarelles grand format
donnent à voir ces équipements dont l'ingéniosité nous fascine. La plupart de ces réalisations ont été rendues possibles par une innovation géniale, celle du béton maritime dont plusieurs images restituent l'élaboration et la mise en oeuvre dans les chantiers de pleine mer.
La seconde partie est consacrée au génie civil de l'armée romaine. Afin d'arracher les légionnaires à l'oisiveté générée par les temps de paix, les généraux leur assignent des tâches d'intérêt général. Ils ouvrent des routes, bâtissent des ponts, creusent des canaux et construisent des aqueducs, contribuant ainsi à la romanisation des provinces qu'ils ont soumises.
Les restitutions saisissantes de Jean-Claude Golvin nous plongent au coeur de ces chantiers où le soldat troque le pilum et le gladius contre la pelle et la pioche.
L'exposition est ouverte aux mêmes horaires que la librairie Actes Sud.
