- Friday October 2 at 7 pm: "The foam of space-time" by Jean-Pierre Luminet.
In preview for M13, Jean-Pierre Luminet will summarize the content of his next book on quantum gravity, to be published in mid-October.
Last episode in the advances of modern physics: the physics of the infinitely large has joined that of the infinitely small, and cosmology has united with the physics of particles.
At the origin of the Universe and matter, some 14 billion years ago, there was indeed only energy. It remains to understand the nature of this curious interaction between energy, space, time and matter.
To solve the riddle, we imagined theories (superstrings, loops, non-commutative geometry, entropic gravity and three others described here for the first time in an accessible way) from which mind-blowing models emerge today.
Some see the fabric of space-time made up of tiny bits of elementary space and time, others see it blurry, still others see reality as an illusion due to the large number of particles of which we are made.
- Friday October 9 at 7 pm: "In search of distant planets" by Magali Deleuil.
For the past twenty years, we have now been certain of the existence of planets orbiting stars other than our Sun. These new planets, called exoplanets, have very different characteristics from those of the planets in the solar system.
We will talk about how we detect them and what knowledge we have about them. We will see the diversity of the populations of planets discovered, and in particular those which have no equivalent in the Solar System, such as the "super Earths" or the "hot Jupiters" and, correlatively, the many questions that their discovery raises as to to their mechanism of formation and evolution but also on the existence of life outside the solar system.
Identifying planets that can present favorable conditions for life is now the challenge for the next decade.
