Marseille, cultural city break – city centre

Since 2013, Marseille has focused its attention on promoting culture. One of the key cultural spots in the city is the Old Port with a rich mix of museums and other cultural attractions. Start at Fort Saint-Jean and onwards from there to the MuCEM. Then walk past the Villa Méditerranée to get to the Regards de Provence museum set in a former maritime health clinic. Opposite take a few moments to contemplate Marseille Cathedral. After lunch in the Joliette quarter, in the throes of redevelopment, the Vieille Charité cultural complex makes a fascinating visit. Your tour of Marseille concludes at the Friche Belle de Mai, a forum of culture and interaction. An ideal tour for a day in the city.

The seven wonders of the Bouches-du-Rhône

This tour showcases seven wonders around the Bouches-du-Rhône, easily covered in just half a day if you're riding in a helicopter or – and this is our personal recommendation – staggered over several days during your next trip to Provence! Starting in the north of the department, make your way slowly but surely down to Marseille. The first wonder is Les Baux-de-Provence, one of the prettiest villages in France. Then travel back in time at the Arles Amphitheatre before you are completely wowed by the Camargue countryside. Like Cézanne, you'll be enchanted by the sight of Mount Saint-Victoire before you head for a stroll along Cours Mirabeau, the main boulevard in the centre of Aix-en-Provence. End with a flourish in Marseille where its Old Port and calanques, those stunning natural creeks, are protected world heritage sites.

Arles, cultural city break ancient and modern

Arles is an oasis of antiquity with its archaeology museum, Roman amphitheatre and the long-condemned ancient cryptoporticus. You'll travel back to the Middle Ages with a visit to the Church of St. Trophime and Montmajour Abbey that affords fantastic views all around. At the Fondation Van Gogh, learn about the painter's work and his influence on the art world, while the Réattu gives you an insight into 19th and 20th century art history. Don't forget to stop for lunch (we recommend J.L Rabanel) and follow that with more culture at the Actes Sud centre.
