Editorial
The Bouches-du-Rhône really is a place apart! It is one of France's most urban and populated areas, yet also home to exceptional natural sites such as the 'Calanques' fjords, Camargue and inland Provence… Our 'Belles Routes' itineraries reveal all! Each itinerary is a great opportunity to explore the Bouches-du-Rhône's stunning towns, villages, cultural sites and landscapes. We love getting off the beaten track and showing visitors the authentic and contemporary aspects of the area you'll never find in a traditional guide. Enjoy the trip!
Bouches-du-Rhône : Green Provence
The Bouches-du-Rhône is a genuine paradise for outdoor activities. Riders, walkers and cyclists will love our bridle paths, footpaths and trails bathed in sunshine. And our climate means you can get out all year long! What's more, over half of the area is a 'green zone', dotted with nature reserves, national parks, forests and around 30 protected public domains maintained by the Area Council.
Sunlight and exotic climes
Fancy getting away from it all? The winding roads of the Bouches-du-Rhône lead to many marvels, such as the Côte Bleue marine park, regional nature reserves of Camargue and Les Alpilles, the 'Calanques' national park, protected public domains, Sainte Victoire mountain as portrayed by Cézanne, Pagnol's Garlaban, secret grottos in the hills, and the parks and gardens of our 'Département Fleuri' (region in bloom) – the Bouches-du-Rhône is the only area in south-eastern France boasting this label !
Step-by-step discovery
Whether you prefer to go it alone or tour with a guide, this is the very best way to get a close-up on Provence. Our 2,600 km of official walking and hiking itineraries are interspersed with sumptuous views, dizzy cliffs, deserted coves, humble chapels and hidden grottos… Of guaranteed quality, all are signposted and well laid-out. Some are fitted with information panels and all are maintained with loving care.
Cycling Adventures
Beautiful country lanes, itineraries for every level and uphill climbs coveted by sportsmen… the inland areas and coast are a paradise for cycle tours. Whether you prefer pedalling on smooth tarmac or fancy a peaceful tour off the beaten track, the area offers a vast network of quiet routes perfect for solitary excursions or with family and friends. On your bike!
Don't take risks!
The Bouches-du-Rhône's forests are more exposed to fire hazards in summer and their access is restricted or prohibited in certain weather conditions from June 1st to September 30th to protect walkers and sites.
