Messe de minuit et cérémonie du pastrage

Barbentane - Eglise Notre Dame de Grâce - Christmas in Provence, Provençal Christmas - In December, January - Dates and program to be confirmed - Free

The midnight mass at Barbentane prepares early enough during the month of December, during the time of Advent.Christmas is celebrated at midnight, but well before a team of volunteers is organized to make a nursery fit to welcome baby Jesus, Savior of men. The santons that populate the Manger represent the villagers come to prostrate themselves as the shepherds did before them. These wax figures are made by the Carmelite nuns of AVIGNON. The crib frame resembles the environment natural of the Montagnette with pine branches, mosses, boxwood, wild orchids, nests, waterfalls, various foliage. Lighting also requires a lot of installation. All these preparations are being perpetuated every year for centuries to celebrate a solemn mass in the tradition of Provence. Songs and music by Nicolas SABOLY, preparing the agency that starts with the reception of the celebrant. The Assembly of parishioners increased in tonight for a few costumed Provencal listens to the word. The men received at the entrance to the candle, light reflecting their heritage and parental authority. Offering children, young girls and Provencal ladies come in procession offer the fruits of the Earth. The Priors of St Jean, dressed as shepherds, move towards the altar to bless the small cart wrapped, decorated with foliage and led by a lamb. The procession moves to the crib and the child Jesus is brought before the altar where all the men of the Assembly come to bow down and kiss the foot of the child Jesus. This very special moment recalls the advent time preaching during which Jean-Baptiste has prepared the coming of the Lord, the Lamb of God. This custom of the Pastrage in Barbentane illustrates devotion towards his patron saint Jean Baptiste village, even if the event arouses some curiosities. The mass continues with the consecration of bread and wine, communion in the body of the child Savior, whereas songs and prayers, and the famous Christian midnight. After sending, the faithful are invited to various representations of the pastoral performed annually by the art group, the day after Christmas.

Quince

A story that will make you turn to jelly...

As yellow as sunshine and as warm as a winter fireplace... The quince isn't very pretty, but the people of Provence love it. You could even say that a passion has been born between this irregular-shaped fruit, somewhat resembling a dented, rustic pear and our lovers of jams, jellies and pastes.
