L’oeuvre photographique d’Alfred Latour fait pour la première fois l’objet d’une exposition institutionnelle au musée Réattu. Dans la préface de la Revue des arts et métiers graphiques du 25 août 1931, le poète et critique d’art Philippe Soupault écrivait : “On a voulu à tout prix que la photographie fût un art […]. À part de très rares exceptions, de ces exceptions qui confirment la règle, les photographes cherchèrent à faire de la peinture.”… Avant d’être photographe, Alfred Latour est peintre. Aussi son oeuvre ne s’inscrit-il pas dans cette quête un peu vaine, mais se place de façon légitime dans l’histoire même de la photographie et rejoint – le temps d’une exposition – les cimaises du premier musée des beaux-arts français à avoir collectionné cet art.
Prises entre la fin des années 1920 et le début des années 1960, ces photographies révèlent un talent méconnu chez celui qui fut membre de l’Union des artistes modernes (UAM), fondée par Robert Mallet-Stevens. Sa vision de peintre, de publiciste et de designer de tissus trouve dans la photographie un champ d’expression qu’il explorera avec passion. En 1936, il mettra brièvement son regard au service de l’agence Meurisse à Paris, et réalisera une série de reportages qui illustrent cette année de tensions politiques et d’avancées sociales. Installé à Eygalières à partir de 1932, Alfred Latour y aménage deux ateliers : l’un pour la peinture, l’autre pour le graphisme, le design et la publicité. Il utilise la photographie pour documenter ses recherches formelles et saisir la vie de son village. Sur le plan du style, Latour s’inscrit dans une esthétique qui vise l’épure. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Alfred Latour ne réalise plus des photographies qu’à des fins privées. Au fil des années, il crée une grande fresque en noir et blanc – formidable témoignage ethnosociologique de la vie à Eygalières. A l’occasion de l’exposition un ouvrage est co-édité par la Fondation Alfred Latour et les Éditions Actes Sud.
