Anatomie du Paysage

Arles - Exhibition - January 28-June 11

Place intimately linked to its environment, the Réattu museum boasts an idyllic view on the Rhone, which is his most beautiful postcard, his first "photography." By settling here, the Knights of Malta invented, probably imagine, a perfectly framed landscape, that would snap the vision of the artists of centuries later. The first was Jacques Réattu, which followed many painters, sculptors and photographers, all fascinated by this prospect. View. Framework. Perspective. These words, inherited the painting, are found in the vocabulary of photography. They translate the idea of a cut in the real by the artist, who takes a part of the country that surrounds it to make a "landscape". Where did the idea of a form of Anatomy, an art of cutting applied to the landscape, which the instrument is no longer a scalpel but the camera lens. 130 selected works thus illustrate the variety of looks and traces the perpetual conquest of new territories of expression photographers. Revealing the genius of the place, detecting in the body of the unsuspected nature links, they continue to invent new forms of landscape, pushing still further the limits of the genre: natural parks American Ansel Adams to the body-landscapes of Lucien Clergue, urban views of Robert Doisneau to places of memory photographed by Jean-Claude Gautrand and Ambroise Tézenas.
