Alice Neel : peintre de la vie moderne

Arles - Exhibition - 04 March-17 September

This retrospective on Alice Neel (1900-1984) – one of the most important North American artists, yet long ignored during his lifetime - is the fruit of a partnership between various European institutions. Exposure to the Vincent van Gogh Arles Foundation wishes to highlight this realistic brush artist. Neel portraits, imbued with a strong psychological dimension, testify close to a century of developments in attitudes towards gender and race, and the changes in fashion in American society. Evolving in an era that declares the abstraction as the new modernity, Neel remains a "painter of modern life" as imagined Baudelaire, with which it shares the same vision of modernity and the role of the artist towards it.Marked both by Expressionism and realism, his work reflects the paradoxical personality of Alice Neel, who wishes to paint all social classes and create a Visual story, a "human comedy".Designed by the great scholar of Alice Neel, Jeremy Lewison, the exhibition presents more than seventy rooms, including a portrait of Andy Warhol "laid bare" by the painter to the sharp look. After the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki and the Hague Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, the Vincent van Gogh Foundation welcomes this major exhibition before it continues its trajectory towards Germany at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg.
