Khâemouaset, le prince archéologue, Savoir et pouvoir à l'époque de Ramsès II

Le prince Khâemouaset, grand prêtre du dieu Ptah à Memphis, a été un des personnages les plus puissants d’Egypte à l’époque de Ramsès II. Il est passé à la postérité comme premier archéologue de l’histoire tant il s’est intéressé au passé en restaurant les monuments des rois de l’Ancien Empire dans la région entre Gizeh et Saqqarah.

Le Musée départemental Arles antique consacre cette exposition à ce personnage, image même de l’érudit et de l’homme de pouvoir égyptien. Elle met en exergue son lien avec Ramsès II qu’il assista toute sa vie durant.

C’est à Memphis, qu’il servit le plus assidument les desseins de son père. Il est ainsi particulièrement connu pour son implication dans la promotion du taureau Apis, représentant du dieu Ptah sur terre et pour la création des petits souterrains du Sérapéum, lieu d’inhumation de ces taureaux sacrés. Le musée du Louvre prête à l’occasion de l’évènement arlésien, les plus belles pièces trouvées par Mariette dans les tombes de ces taureaux ainsi que les bijoux et amulettes qui couvraient la momie du prince.

A travers ce personnage et ses contemporains, il sera possible d’évoquer la richesse des connaissances de l’élite égyptienne. A cette époque, le savoir était empirique et il est parfois difficile de parler véritablement de science, mais il est pour autant très éloigné de cet aspect secret et mystérieux dont on a longtemps voulu le recouvrir. Le legs intellectuel de l’Egypte ancienne est considérable : on lui doit par exemple notre année solaire de 365 jours, l’élaboration du diagnostic médical ou encore l’invention de la première couleur artificielle…

L’œuvre de Khaemouaset est telle qu’au Ier siècle de notre ère, plus d’un millénaire après sa mort, son souvenir était encore suffisamment vivace pour que des contes vantent son savoir. De nos jours, ce personnage ne cesse de fasciner et devient même le héros d’une bande dessinée dont quelques planches dues à Isabelle Dethan seront dévoilées dans nos salles.
