  • Café le Grillon on Cours Mirabeau in Aix-en-Provence is the place to go if you like people-watching while sipping an espresso or cup of tea.

  • If you're on the coast, head to a port to enjoy the morning fish market and settle down at a café terrace to appreciate this typical Mediterranean scene in a picturesque decor. Cassis's port is a great way to start the day, before heading off for some scuba diving or a games of boules.

  • If you're not a morning person, you'll enjoy adventuring into the lanes of La Ciotat for brunch at Café de l’Horloge.

Lunching with family or friends

  • At lunchtime, do like the locals and head to Café de la Place in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

  • Place des Cardeurs in Aix-en-Provence features a host of pretty terraces for lapping up the sunshine and savouring a tasty mixed salad.Share your restaurant terrace tips for business lunches or eating with friends in Aix-en-Provence with us at http://bonsplans.myprovence.fr/fr/.

  • Rest your feet at Regards Café and admire the vistas over the sea, MuCEM museum and Fort Saint-Jean. This simply has to be one of Marseille's prettiest decors. Summer plusses? The 'Suivez Notre Regards' evenings held on the new outdoor terrace of the Musée Regards de Provence to prolong the feast for the eyes until dawn...

  • There's no terrace here but a magnificent garden instead for a chic country lunch in Camargue. Set between wetlands and rice fields, book a seat now at the gastronomic restaurant La Chassagnette

'A Pastis please!'

In Provence, the star of the aperitif is Pastis. It is traditionally serves 'à la marseillaise', i.e. one volume of pastis and five volumes of chilled water with ice. Between the plane trees, little squares, fountains and narrow lanes so typical of the towns and villages of Provence, you'll find a host of addresses for trying out a 'mauresque' (pastis and barley cordial), 'perroquet' (pastis and mint cordial) or 'tomate' (pastis and grenadine cordial).

  • If you're a fan of football and pastis alike, don't miss the matches broadcast on the terrace of the Bar des PTT – a genuine institution in Aix-en-Provence.

  • An alternative to pastis, but just as popular, is beer. Enjoy a refreshing brew, topped with a festive atmosphere and live music on the terrace of the Evans pub in Martigues.

  • The other star of the aperitif in Provence is – naturellement - wine. Red or white are the favourites in winter, a nice chilled rosé in summer. The shaded terrace of the Ouvre Boîte in Arles is a top meeting place for evening drinks with friends and serves tapas too.

  • If you're seeking a trendy, novel ambience with plenty of nibbles to boot, invite your friends for a treetop cocktail in Aubagne.
